Letter from Morley Observer and Advertiser 30/8/06 Councillor Finnegan recently submitted - and then withdrew - a motion to Leeds City Council congratulating the council on winning ‘the sports centres refurbishment programme and notes the positive impact this will have on local communities, including Morley and fully supports its implementation.’ Of course, this is exactly why the Labour government is to blame since Coun Finnegan reckons that Sports Minister Richard Caborn has ruled that refurbishment is not an option. Perhaps the Minister is aware of Coun Finnegan’s comment in the Observer on May 31 2006 that he wanted a replacement for Morley Leisure Centre – not a refurbishment as he now claims. What lead does this confusion give to anybody. Least of all the officers of Leeds City Council who have to draw up a scheme? We have seen this Finnegan fudge before. He opposed the building of the new Asquith Primary School because it was a PFI scheme. Now that the school is a great success, Coun Finnegan has retreated and he seems reluctant to talk about it. Morley South Labour Party supports the widest possible consultation on the future of the centre, including the people whose dedication has made it such a popular attraction in the past. We will also examine very closely any proposals Coun Finnegan and his colleagues on Leeds City Council produce for taking the centre out of council control.
